Under the Veil, ongoing

What is immigrant’s identity? How can one adapt to a new culture without losing features of one’s own culture?

The photographs were taken in Ann’s home in Brandenburg, a young woman who moved to Germany from Uganda in search of a new life. Where will this search lead her, and how will the environment and her new home affect her?

While some of the photographs depict clothing, national jewelry, and individual objects that link her to her past in Uganda, others instead refer to the image of the marble veil, a symbol of Western European sculpture with the effect of a marble veil. However the dark skin and facial features are not visible from underneath, only the dark silhouette, and the flower string lights that illuminate her room in the evening wrap around her head.

What does the veil hide?
