Consuming Nature, 2022
The series features natural objects that are purchased as handicraft accessories. Such goods as pieces of wood, bark, and moss, have turned into mass consumption commodities that have become available in German stores and online marketplaces across the world. The photographs reveal the transformation of natural material into casual objects of consumption just like food or household items. Specialized brands sell natural products for handicraft purposes advertising their decorative qualities and usability. Their descriptions on e-commerce websites aim to attribute unified properties of manufactured goods, such as size and color to the objects of nature. However, each of them has unique characteristics and thus cannot be replicated.
Wrapped in cellophane, natural material gets objectified, looking similar to the insides of an X-rayed grocery bag. A light pattern makes natural shapes and outlines appear to be a colorless scan produced by an industrial X-ray machine. Thus, the barcodes on the natural objects become a part of this pattern representing the commodification of objects that are not human-made.
